Bringing Food and Hope to the Lushagala Refugee Camp
In December of 2024, our Franciscan brothers traveled to the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to visit refugees living in the Lushagala Camp.
Lushagala, located in the North Kivu province in Goma, is home to thousands of people fleeing the horrors of war in the DRC. Though many arrive at the refugee camp in search of safe haven, Lushagala is still a difficult and dangerous place to live. Orphaned children roam the camp, vulnerable to those who wish to harm them. Mothers of newborn infants don’t know where their next meal will come from. People struggle to find shelter and clothing, with only the shirt on their back to protect them from the elements.

Our Franciscan brothers were moved by the pain and desolation of the people. During their visit they delivered meals and met with camp officials to understand their urgent needs.
With over 2,000 orphans in the camp, many children are searching for food and comfort. People cannot work or farm due to the instability of war. Our brothers also witnessed the emotional toll that war has taken on the people. The refugees were in desperate need of psychological support and hope for the future.
After the visit, Franciscan Missions set a goal to assist 460 vulnerable refugee households. In March of 2025, the brothers returned to administer food aid including rice, corn flour, beans, soy, sugar, salt, and vegetable oil, and gave hope to the people in the process.
As the war continues, Franciscan Missions will continue to provide critical aid to the refugees at Lushagala through material goods and prayer.
