Can you hear the cries of children and families trapped in the cities of Ukraine as the bombs and the rockets rain down? Do you feel the panic of young mothers with their children trying to escape the horror of this war by fleeing to neighboring countries? Our Franciscan missionaries in Ukraine have been witnessing this brutal war unfold for the last few weeks. Father Danyil Botvina, OFM, the Provincial of the Franciscan Province of St. Michael the Archangel in Ukraine has sent us an urgent request for funds to help provide food, medicine, and shelter to the refugees living through this tragedy. Will you help keep hope alive in Ukraine?
This province has 16 friaries throughout Ukraine with 65 friars serving 54 parishes. Some are in areas that have already fallen under the control of the Russian Army. The friars are hosting refugees who are seeking food and protection. Others are in the cities that are under siege and bombardment. Our friars hear and feel the explosions every day. Refugees, mostly women, children, and the frail and elderly seek safety, food, and protection at our friaries and parishes. The friars help keep hope alive in Ukraine, but as you can imagine, the need is so great that they are overwhelmed.
Help Keep Hope Alive in Ukraine
It is my hope and prayer that you will support Franciscan missionaries in Ukraine as they serve the refugees who are trying to survive this tragic war. Our friars are distributing food and water under difficult circumstances. Last week, one group of our friars arrived at an isolated village to distribute food just as Russian tanks rolled in. The villagers came out to protest. The Franciscan friars stood in front of the villagers as a shield until the situation calmed down.
Today, more than ever, our missionary friars in Ukraine need our support. They will bravely stay and continue to serve the refugees and the Church in this war zone.
