Help children and the elderly restore their lives with Franciscan Missions

By now you will have heard about the devastating impact of Hurricane Melissa on Jamaica. It is difficult to communicate just how damaging this storm has been for the people of this small island nation.

Strong winds, heavy rain, and fallen trees have wreaked havoc on towns and communities across the country.

In the hours and days following the storm, we did not know whether our Franciscan brothers on the island were safe or not. Infrequent communication through social media updates was only possible through Wi-Fi at a local hotel.

Now that the storm has subsided, and the real extent of the wreckage has become apparent, we know how much suffering there is.

Support Jamaica

One immediate way you can help the people of Jamaica is to support our efforts in assisting St. Anthony’s Kitchen. Before Hurricane Melissa, the kitchen was serving meals, Monday through Friday, to 150 people. Food was also taken to neighboring towns and elderly people who could not leave their homes. That number has now risen to 200 and continues to rise every day.

Meals for children before school were especially important at the kitchen. Out of 160 students in the “Get Kids to School” transportation program, 60 received food at St. Anthony’s each day. For many, this meal was the only one they knew they would surely receive. With the hurricane’s devastation, the number of meals needed has risen dramatically.
