In a place where faith often meets challenge, Br. Rolando K. Abas, OFM, set out to renovate the San Vicente Quasi-Parish Church in Balo-i, Lanao del Norte, with a vision for more than just bricks and mortar. The project, which began on February 28, 2024, aimed to add spaces for a pantry, library, sacristy, restrooms, and a function room.
Initially, they hoped their ambitious budget would cover the cost. But as often happens with construction, costs went up. Yet, in the midst of the financial shortfall, something beautiful happened. The community showed up.
As Fr. Rolando shared, “I am greatly touched always that there are members of the community who try their very best to regularly contribute any amount for the completion of the project. Even though they are poor, they are still willing to give.”
On June 30, 2024, the church celebrated a soft opening and blessing, even though some parts remained unfinished. The community gathered to worship in the newly renovated space, and there was joy—joy that despite the challenges, they had something beautiful to show for it.
The renovation is about creating a space for hope and healing. Once finished, the church will be a venue for the Muslim-Christian Dialogue Program, fostering intercultural and interreligious encounters in a place that has seen much division. The community continues to work together, with the hope that more financial support will help them cross the finish line and complete what they’ve started.
