Serving the Vulnerable at the Fray Andresito Soup Kitchen

Physical and Spiritual Hunger

Around the world, countless are starving and don’t know where their next meal will come from. But there is also a deep spiritual hunger for love and connection that is plaguing many.

In the impoverished neighborhoods of La Vega and Patronato, located in Santiago, Chile, homeless individuals, migrants, and the vulnerable elderly face challenges like addiction, mental health issues, and neglect. Many suffer from substance abuse, sexually transmitted diseases, and conditions like schizophrenia and dementia. Family support is often scarce or nonexistent due to abandonment and lack of resources.

Our Franciscan brothers are working to meet the physical and spiritual needs of this community through the Fray Andresito Soup Kitchen at the Franciscan Recoleta Church and Convent.

Upholding the Dignity of All

The Fray Andresito initiative, which began in June of 2025 and will continue through October of 2025, aims to improve the church’s sanitary conditions, meet basic needs, and provide spiritual and emotional support to the community.

The project includes the renovation of nine bathrooms to promote hygiene as well as funding for food and clothing distribution. The initiative also supports the weekly Café Solidario, a project led by young people who offer hot drinks, sandwiches, and spiritual accompaniment to those seeking comfort. It is a place to pray, connect with others, and rest from the burdens of poverty.

The Fray Andresito project has already served as a light in the community and will continue to support approximately 800 individuals each week as a vital source of food and dignity to all those searching for relief and connection.
