Fighting Childhood Malnutrition

In Argentina’s remote villages you are helping us do the Lord’s work.

The small towns of Pichanal and Aguaray are located hundreds of miles away from the nearest city, and the indigenous communities that live there are suffering.

Our Franciscan brothers are providing critical aid to thousands of these families whose most basic needs are unmet. Parents cannot find work, housing is unstable, children are starving, and many turn to the streets with nowhere else to go. Most people do not have a formal education and cannot find opportunities for advancement.

Your generosity supplies much-needed lifesaving support.

Amidst all of the hardship, a primary concern in this region is childhood malnutrition.

Franciscan Missions is working to address this issue in the community, but we cannot do it without your help.

A Place of More Life

Your generosity has already done so much.

To combat malnutrition and create more connections among families, Franciscan Missions has used your charitable donations to establish community centers across the region.

10 years ago, the first center was built in Pichanal. It was called Tekove Katu, meaning “Place of More Life.”

Since then, more centers have been built and Franciscan Missions hopes to continue this vital campaign with your support.

Strengthening the Community

Tekove Katu centers are much more than buildings. They are guiding lights for the community.

The centers operate 365 days a year, welcoming the most vulnerable and promoting the dignity of all people. An average of 90 malnourished children and their mothers attend each of the centers daily.

Thanks to your generosity, 2,100 people, including 300 children, 300 mothers, and 1,500 family members benefit from Tekove Katu centers. The broader community of 17,000 indigenous people also indirectly benefits from the programs which strengthen families and fortify communities.

Playtime, which promotes early childhood development, is coordinated by qualified professionals. Mothers can also socialize and learn new skills. Workshops with sewing machines allow them to mend their children’s clothes and learn to make new ones.

Medical care is another core component of the centers. Pediatricians, gynecologists, and nutritionists help to prevent future issues and address existing ones. Instead of traveling hundreds of miles for healthcare, mothers can get treatment in their communities.

The goal is prevention: prevention of disease, prevention of suffering, and prevention of loneliness.

Educating Mothers on Nutrition

You can make a lasting impact by fighting childhood malnutrition.

While hunger in adults can be alleviated with food, the issue of childhood malnutrition is a much deeper and harder problem to solve.

By donating to our appeal for the Tekove Katu centers, you are helping to educate mothers through cooking classes and nutritional training.

Childhood malnutrition is caused by a combination of social vulnerability, overcrowding, job insecurity, lack of hygiene, and unreliable water and electricity sources.

But it doesn’t have to continue.
