Mis aventuras empezaron justo despu\u00e9s de registrarme en el peque\u00f1o hotel boutique con un gran vaso de caf\u00e9 helado, dos palabras laosianas, sabaidi (<em>hola - pronunciado como &#039;alguien&#039;<\/em>) y khobchai (<em>gracias - pronunciado como &#039;afrontar chay&#039;<\/em>), y muchas sonrisas y lenguaje de se\u00f1as. Lo siguiente que s\u00e9 es que estoy sentado en la parte trasera de un taxi de tres ruedas y me conducen por las calles de Capitol City. Este pa\u00eds es como Vietnam en pastillas para dormir. Laos es para Vietnam lo que Vietnam es para China. Los tres pa\u00edses est\u00e1n conectados intrincadamente a trav\u00e9s de sus alineaciones pol\u00edticas: todos son gobiernos controlados por los comunistas. Hay menos de nueve millones de personas en todo el pa\u00eds. En realidad, m\u00e1s personas viven en Saig\u00f3n que en todo el pa\u00eds de Laos. El tr\u00e1fico de la calle es casi soportable y las carreteras son compartidas por motos y autom\u00f3viles, cuyos conductores parecen respetar el espacio de cada uno. A diferencia de Vietnam, nadie parece tener mucha prisa y, por lo tanto, uno simplemente sigue la corriente. El pa\u00eds es al menos un 95% budista y est\u00e1 manchado con m\u00faltiples templos decorados con colores brillantes en toda la ciudad, as\u00ed como en muchas de las aldeas. No hubo grandes retrasos y cincuenta minutos despu\u00e9s est\u00e1bamos all\u00ed. Pakse se encuentra en la parte sur del pa\u00eds, cerca de Vietnam. El famoso r\u00edo Mekong fluye suavemente por la ciudad. Aqu\u00ed es donde los franciscanos vietnamitas han establecido su misi\u00f3n. Actualmente tienen tres hermanos asignados all\u00ed. El \u00fanico sacerdote fraile ha vivido en Laos desde hace siete a\u00f1os y se ha vuelto bastante fluido en el idioma laosiano. Los otros dos hermanos todav\u00eda est\u00e1n aprendiendo, por lo que tienen que depender mucho de las sonrisas y el lenguaje de se\u00f1as. Afortunadamente para ellos, la gente de Laos es extremadamente c\u00e1lida y acogedora, adem\u00e1s de perdonar cualquier lenguaje falso.<\/p>\n<p>Me aloj\u00e9 en el seminario diocesano porque el convento franciscano ya est\u00e1 pr\u00e1cticamente lleno con dos frailes que viven y comparten un dormitorio para que los cuatro j\u00f3venes que est\u00e1n siendo preparados para los franciscanos puedan ocupar el segundo dormitorio. Viven y rezan con los hermanos y van a la escuela. En el futuro se espera que se inicie un Programa de Formaci\u00f3n Franciscana y que estos j\u00f3venes sean los primeros de, con suerte, muchas m\u00e1s vocaciones. La comunidad insertada est\u00e1 ubicada en uno de los muchos barrios pobres que rodean la ciudad. Seis de los sacerdotes est\u00e1n activos y ministran en un total de 47 iglesias de misi\u00f3n. Nuestro \u00fanico sacerdote franciscano se ocupa de siete aldeas que visita semanalmente. En verdad son solo cinco porque ha sido restringido de dos aldeas. El sitio m\u00e1s distante es una monta\u00f1a rusa de 42 kil\u00f3metros en una motocicleta. Llamar a la ruta un verdadero camino es un cuento de hadas. Es m\u00e1s como un sendero de monta\u00f1a. Estoy seguro de que Jos\u00e9 ingiere al menos dos tazas de tierra cada semana cuando viaja all\u00ed para celebrar la misa semanal. Se queda en el pueblo durante la noche para poder ofrecer la misa en uno de los otros pueblos cercanos. Debido a la falta de sacerdotes, la di\u00f3cesis ha iniciado un programa de entrenamiento catequ\u00e9tico intensivo para los l\u00edderes laicos en las muchas aldeas. Mientras estaba en el seminario, unos treinta hombres y mujeres llegaron de una aldea \u00e9tnica remota a unos 250 kil\u00f3metros de distancia para participar en un programa de capacitaci\u00f3n de dos semanas. Estas valientes almas comprometidas tuvieron que trasladarse tres veces a varios autobuses que pasaban de Vietnam a Pakse. Los autobuses de Laos no paraban de recogerlos. Tal es la vida de los escogidos de Dios.<\/p>\n<p>Tuve el privilegio de poder visitar cuatro de los pueblos mientras estuve all\u00ed. Los frailes tienen un amigo que se ofreci\u00f3 a transportarnos en su Jeep con tracci\u00f3n a las cuatro ruedas. \u00a1Creo que cada uno de mis rellenos se realinearon involuntariamente durante nuestra caminata! Las personas que viven en estas aldeas remotas son miembros de una de las 60 tribus \u00e9tnicas que viven en Laos. Son personas sencillas y amorosas que cultivan caf\u00e9 para ganarse la vida. Los viejos han sido educados de la manera tradicional y la mayor\u00eda no puede leer ni escribir. La educaci\u00f3n no est\u00e1 disponible porque el transporte no est\u00e1 disponible. Es com\u00fan que las ni\u00f1as se casen antes de la adolescencia. A los aldeanos les lleva un tiempo confiar en los forasteros que los alientan a usar productos farmac\u00e9uticos modernos para curar enfermedades comunes que antes se trataban con hierbas y con whisky de arroz hecho en casa. Las actitudes cambiar\u00e1n pero lleva tiempo. El prejuicio y la represi\u00f3n son emociones dif\u00edciles de digerir. Pasar\u00e1 un tiempo antes de que pueda expresar adecuadamente todo lo que vi y escuch\u00e9 mientras estuve all\u00ed. Pienso que ser\u00eda mejor si aplazara mis pensamientos posteriores a un momento posterior cuando regrese a los Estados Unidos. Un laosiano local me dijo que &quot;puedes pensar lo que quieras pero no digas nada&quot;.
